Is Sundin the Answer?

Mats Sundin This is the question I have been confronted with ever since the beginning of the hockey season. Is Sundin the answer to many of New York’s problems early into their season? I recognize that he is an amazing athlete and could help the Rangers in some way, but I’m not convinced he’s worth the investment.

Call me pessimistic but I remember all too way well the days when Glen Sather signed free agent players way past their prime and never lived up to their promise. Not to say that Sundin is past his prime but the his numbers show a steady decline and numbers don’t lie. Besides don’t we have enough centers? Isn’t that why Chris Drury plays on the wing with Gomez? Any interest in Sundin is alarming to me because it violates the Rangers outspoken commitment to become younger and faster. If the Rangers were to shed a couple contracts via a trade and free up some cap space for Sundin somewhere in the ball park of 3 million for the rest of the season I could live with that. His size and added leadership to the team are dimensions I would welcome but only at a reasonable price.

Updated, 4:45 am: Radio reports out of Vancouver state that within a week Sundin will make a decision about his return to the NHL, the Canucks’ official site reports.

If he decides to return this could get interesting considering the list of teams still interested in Sundin’s services. Don’t be shocked if the Rangers make a move soon to enter into the sweepstakes.

On another note it looks like Renney must’ve read my blog and felt the need to give Prucha a chance! Well even if he didn’t I’m still glad Coach came to his senses. Prucha will be in the line up when the Penguins visit MSG on Wednesday. He will play on a line with Dubinsky and Voros. I expect this line to generate some scoring chances and deliver the energy needed to excite the MSG crowd. I’m also looking forward to see how Zherdev will do with Gomez and Naslund. Combining Zherdev with Gomez is a move I’ve been advocating for a while and don’t be surprised if they put up a few points by game’s end.

Let me refresh your memory in case you forgot how explosive the Naslund-Gomez-Zherdev line is….
